Guadalupe Moreno awarded doctorate

In November 2020, Guadalupe Moreno received her doctorate for “Working Fictions of Money: The Making of Currency (Dis)trust in Argentina (1880–2020).” In her dissertation, she analyzes the monetary crises in Argentina since the late nineteenth century. Special focus lies on the development of an explanation for monetary stability based on the concept of trust and the Argentinean central bank’s attempt between 2016 and 2018 to recover long-lost trust in the national currency with an inflation-targeting monetary regime. Combining a sociological perspective, which emphasizes the role of monetary habits and routines in the creation of monetary trust, and a political-economy perspective, which stresses that trust in money needs to be sociopolitically established, the project studies the process of creation and re-creation of monetary trust. Moreno was a doctoral student at the International Max Planck Research School on the Social and Political Constitution of the Economy (IMPRS-SPCE) from 2016 to 2020 and is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute.
