Sandhya A.S. Awarded Doctorate
In August 2023, Sandhya A.S. received her doctorate from the University of Duisburg-Essen. In her dissertation, “Making Mobility a Market: An Economic Sociology of Migration Brokerage,” she explores recent developments in the transnational organization of labor migration by profit-oriented actors. Taking the example of Nepal as a case study, Sandhya A.S. analyzes the practices and processes of migration brokerage from a sociology of markets perspective. The study shows how deeply the practices of intermediaries are institutionally embedded, and thus goes beyond conventional network-oriented approaches. Sandhya A.S. was a doctoral researcher at the IMPRS-SPCE between 2018 and 2022 and is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at the Institute of East Asian Studies, University of Duisburg-Essen.
