Journal Article Prize goes to Donato Di Carlo

Donato Di Carlo was awarded the 2021 Journal Article Prize by the Society of Friends and Former Associates of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies during this year’s MPIfG Annual Colloquium in November. He received the prize for the article ”Understanding Wage Restraint in the German Public Sector: Does the Pattern Bargaining Hypothesis Really Hold Water?”, which was published in 2020 in Industrial Relations Journal. The jury praised his work, describing it as an exciting empirical and theoretical deconstruction of one of the central assumptions of comparative political economy, namely that wage coordination is the main explanation for German wage restraint. The 750-euro prize goes to the best article by an MPIfG researcher in a peer-reviewed journal. Di Carlo was a doctoral student at the International Max Planck Research School on the Social and Political Constitution of the Economy (IMPRS-SPCE) from 2015 to 2019, spent one year at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence as Max Weber Fellow 2020/21, and is currently a senior researcher at the MPIfG.
